MANJAZ HISTORY |
Manjaz, a dream comes true…
Compared to the names of other Swiss watch brands, Manjaz has a rather exotic sound. Who would have expected a brand by that name in the Swiss Jura, hidden between mountain chains? Welschenrohr, its hometown, lies in a valley whose inhabitants are French-speaking at one end, and German-speaking at the other.
Manjaz is the brainchild of Dominik Fluri, who lived there in the second half of the 19th century. In a letter to his uncle written in 1876 he expressed his dream of creating a watch brand one day by the phantasy name of Manjaz. Despite numerous attempts, he didn’t live to see his project being realised. But he had laid the foundation of a watch trading business that his descendants developed with considerable success in Asia. His grandson Hubert Fluri being a great traveller established important business ties in Japan, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. It would take another two generations of the Fluris to make Dominik Fluri’s dream come true. Hubert Fluri, born 1929, gave the initial spark to the foundation of Manjaz and has well established the business in the Far Eastern market. |
